5 Movies That Won OSCAR For Visual Effects

Inception

Inception is a 2010 science fiction film written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan, and co-produced by Emma Thomas. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious, and is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for a seemingly impossible task: “inception”, the implantation of another person’s idea into a target’s subconscious.

Life of Pi

Life of Pi is a 2012 American survival drama film based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee, the film’s adapted screenplay was written by David Magee. The lead visual effects company for Life of Pi was Rhythm & Hues Studios. The R&H VFX (Visual Effects) Supervisor Bill Westenhofer said that discussions of the project began with Ang Lee in August 2009. The VFX work of this film was remarkable and beyond perfection.

Interstellar

Interstellar is a 2014 epic science fiction film directed, co-written and co-produced by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. The visual effects company Double Negative, which developed effects for Nolan’s 2010 film Inception, worked on Interstellar.

Visual effects supervisor Paul Franklin said the number of effects in the film was not much greater than in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises or Inception, but that for Interstellar, they created the effects first, so that digital projectors could be used to display them behind the actors, rather than having the actors perform in front of green screens.

Ultimately the film contained 850 visual effect shots at a resolution of 5600 x 4000 lines: 150 shots that were created in camera using digital projectors and another 700 were created in post-production. Of those, 620 were presented in IMAX, while the rest were anamorphic.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book is a 2016 American fantasy adventure film, directed and co-produced by Jon Favreau, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and written by Justin Marks. Principal photography took place entirely on sound stages at L.A. Center Studios in downtown Los Angeles. The animal characters were created entirely in key frame computer animation, with the assistance of footage of real animal movement, the actors recording their lines, and performance capture for reference. The production team underwent a thorough process to realistically convey the animals’ speaking, while still making them perceptually believable to the audience.

Gravity

Gravity is a 2013 science fiction adventure film directed, co-written, co-edited and co-produced by Alfonso Cuarón. It stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts who are stranded in space after the mid-orbit destruction of their space shuttle, and their subsequent attempt to return to Earth. Visual effects were supervised by Tim Webber at the London-based VFX Company Framestore, which was responsible for creating most of the film’s visual effects; Framestore was also heavily involved in the art direction and, along with The Third Floor, the previsualization. Tim Webber stated that 80 percent of the movie consisted of CG—compared to James Cameron’s Avatar.

After seeing the list of Oscar winning films you might have also developed an interest in VFX. Just so you know the numbers of VFX jobs in Kolkata are increasing at a very rapid rate. If you are willing then you can very well sign up for a graphic design course that will lead you to great opportunities in future.
