Pacific Rim, a production of Universal Pictures, Legendary Pictures has recently hit the theatres and people cannot keep calm about the mind-boggling Visual effects. John Boyega takes us on the biggest battle this planet has ever seen. Jaegers and giant Kaiju monsters are more threatening than what we thought. The film maintained its series of suspense. In February 2017, three new jaegers were revealed making the audience go crazy over this film.
Much of the anticipation came at rest after it was released. Atomic Fiction, Double Negative & ILM were the companies that worked on the VFX. The Kaiju creatures were formed by the Double negative. In total, the film had 1600 shots and 1038 were solely dedicated to the Kaiju creatures (also done by Double Negative).
The overall VFX supervisor, Peter Chiang monitored all these 1600 shots to make sure there was no room left for useless criticism and pinpoint. The anatomy was designed keeping in mind the bodily structures and how to not make them too rigid for the screen? Bones, muscles, flesh, expressions, bony structured spikes were some of the key elements used in this designing.
The jaegers look hundred times more perfect and stunning than the original 2013 film. Jaegers fighting with each other and the parallel mission to save the world just about become more interesting. The film used both blue and green screens for background manipulation. Masking was done over stunt guys and actors to make them look superficial.
Pacific Rim was awaited for more than four years and now that it is out there; it feels like it was worth the wait. Check out the before and after visual effects shots and the entire blog will start making sense to you. Andrew Booth, the Computer Graphics Supervisor said that this film will remain as an example of the best CGI work of films ever.
VFX is an ever growing and evolving piece of an art form. This film will not just raise standards but make the visual effects courses up to their curriculum. Kolkata never backs down when it comes to portraying updates in VFX. The raised standards and great computer graphics are about to bring a change in VFX training in Kolkata.
