VFX Work Of The Film Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster film directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini and Ron Perlman. The screenplay was written by Travis Beacham and del Toro from a story by Beacham. The film is set in the future, when Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal monsters which have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

From the very description you can make that the entire movie has been worked up on with the help of visual effects. Del Toro hired Oscar winners John Knoll and Hal T. Hickel, both known for their work on the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Legacy Effects co-owner Shane Mahan, known for creating the armored suits for Iron Man, was tasked with building the suits, helmets and conn-pods. Oscar winner Clay Pinney, known for his work on Independence Day and Star Trek, was also brought on board. Hybride Technologies, a division of Ubisoft, and Rodeo FX also contributed to the visual effects.

Fans of Pacific Rim are currently waiting patiently to hear what will happen with the development of Pacific Rim 2 and Universal Pictures. The film was removed from the studio’s 2017 release schedule, but they have said the project has not been abandoned. The visual effects work done by the company Animation Boss, and it reminds you just how much work on the film needed to be done in post-production. When your action sequences involve giant monsters fighting a giant robot controlled by people, your action sequences are going to be created entirely with visual effects.

As a director, Del Toro has a vision, and it’s up to the visual effects company to realize that to the best of their ability. I’m consistently impressed and amazed at how much visual effects work goes into these movies, no matter how many times I see featurettes like this. For over 2 years the team at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, Singapore and Vancouver worked tirelessly to bring Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction epic “Pacific Rim” to life. This reel represents a taste of the visual effects work the team was tasked with in creating everything from monstrous Kaiju to the man-made Jaegers and the environments they are seen in.
