Horror films and visual effects (VFX) are parallel and go hand in hand with each other. Right from films like Saw to Conjuring and latest Anushka Sharma starring Pari are all good examples of how important of role visual effects play in making something productive out of these films.
Corpses, ghosts, spirits, the environment and the haunted feel cannot be created without visual effects. Artificial imagery is significant in these films. Sure, prosthetics and makeup give them a makeover but that cannot make the ghost from Conjuring appear as if it is flying. For those visual effects is necessary. Undoubtedly, there is no match for the present visual effects that this industry offers but it goes way back to the time when haunted movies were just beginning.
The sequel of Annabelle though was a scary venture but it had a lot to do with post production editing skills of visual effects artists. The use of diesel and steam innovations is yet another stone carving history attained by this industry.
Hollywood is obsessed with vampires and werewolves. Although for vampires a certain part is done with makeup and the rest is VFX but in the case of werewolves they are all nothing but a product of CGI. Those are nothing but green colored props to which actors pretend to see as werewolves. Imagine what would happen if any one of them actually turn against them? Movies made after 2000 raised the bar. Earlier Zombies were shown with nothing hut just plain makeup and because of the black and white film no one could even pick up any faults there. However, now a team of VFX artists would be working on in order to get the zombies correct.
Change is the constant in cinema and we will continue to witness betterment in horror movies as VFX technology keeps getting better each passing day. It is not just for Hollywood and Bollywood films but regional cinema is nowhere behind. If you take a look at the progress of VFX institutes in Kolkata then it will occur to you how much potential is actually there. More students are directed towards visual effects courses seeing the impact it actually has.
